The Difference Between Supermarket & Salon Brand Hair Products

The difference between supermarket and salon brand hair products is not only in price, but also in quality. Many people use supermarket hair products because they are inexpensive but what they do not realize is that the low cost is often  a symbol of low quality.

If you are looking for quality then you should get salon hair products. There are many reasons why you should be ready to spend a little more on your shampoo, conditioner and styling gel from your local salon.

The main difference between supermarket and salon brand hair products is the ingredients used. Salon brand hair products are made using essential proteins which can repair your hair. Supermarket products, on the other hand, have a high concentration of fillers such as water and this is why they are inexpensive. You will get more water when you buy supermarket products and this makes them less effective than salon hair products. However, this is not to say that salon products do not have fillers. They have but a very small percentage and this is why they are more expensive than supermarket products.

Your salon products will normally contain conditioning agents of higher quality than supermarket products. A salon shampoo, for instance, will have high quality moisturizing and protein ingredients which can penetrate deep into the skin to repair damaged hair.

The difference between supermarket & salon hair products can also be noted in terms of surfactants used. Surfactants are the lathering agents in hair products. Supermarket brands use ammonium laurel sulfate and it can remove essential oils from your hair to leave it dry and coarse. On the other hand, salon hair products use sodium laureth sulfate softer surfactant which will leave your hair looking softer and shiny. When shopping for hair products you should keep away from any product with laurel as an ingredient and instead go for laureth.

Salon hair products can last longer than supermarket brands. This is because salon products are more concentrated which means you will only use a small amount as compared to less concentrated supermarket hair products. In the end, you will spend less than a person who buys supermarket products. Besides, supermarket products can result in buildup in your hair and the build up is not healthy. It will make your hair hard to style and also remove its natural shine.

When you purchase your hair products from a salon, a stylist can recommend the best product for your hair. There are different products for different hair types and a professional stylist is in a better position to help you choose the best product for your hair. He or she can look at your hair and help you choose a product which can increase its thickness or repair damaged roots for example.

When you are buying hair products you want to make sure that it is of high quality. There is a big difference between salon and supermarket hair products because of the type of ingredients used to make the two products. Knowing the difference between supermarket and salon hair brand products can make a difference in the final outcomes.

How to Maintain Colored Hair

After you’ve just spent money getting your hair colored, the last thing you want is for a faded look within the first week. We see this happen all the time, mainly from hairdressers not explaining how to look after colored hair.

There are ways in which you can maintain your hair to get longer lasting color, we’ve outlined some points in this post.

  1. Try to avoid washing your hair a day or two prior to a color service. This allows the natural oils to build up on the scalp which will better protect it.
  2. Use a shampoo and conditioner best suited to your hair type. Your hairdresser should recommend what would be best for your hair type and color. We recommend the De Lorenzo color shampoo range which helps extend the color we put on our clients.
  3. In the shower, use cool water rather than hot. The cool water helps keep the hair color in place, while hot water can fade the color.
  4. Heat from the hair dryer can damage your hair. Hair color can be oxidized by too much of it, turning it dull and brassy. Do not use blow-drier continuously for a long time, especially in the same spot.
  5. The rays of the sun also oxidize color. Protect your hair against the sun. If possible, safeguard your hair with a special sunscreen for hair (or leave-in conditioner) before going outside.
  6. Regularly condition your hair. Since hair color is a chemical, it tends to weaken your hair, often promoting it to break easily. By regular conditioning, you can keep the strands break-resistant and pliable.
  7. Choose the correct color shade. If you’re concerned about the fading of hair color, go for a blond or brown shade. A red color is known for quick fading.
  8. Regularly touch up your hair. Semi and demi-permanent colors need to be retouched after every 6 to 8 weeks. Permanent colors require touch-ups every 4 to 6 weeks, and double-process blond requires touchup every 2 to 4 weeks.
  9. Regularly trim your hair. Straggly ends make the hair color look dull. To avoid this, get a trim at least once every 6 to 8 weeks.
  10. One good way to preserve your hair color is to get a hair gloss in between color services at the salon. For example, you might have got your hair darkened for fall or winter; dark color tends to get washed out from within 3 weeks. Getting the hair glossed at the salon will add vibrancy and color to your hair and will also make it shine.
  11. Our hair typically grows about one centimeter each month. When styling your hair at home, it can have an affect on your hair and its color. For example, using hot irons on your hair all the time can damage your hair if it’s not protected. Ensure that your irons don’t get too hot, put them on medium heat.

De Lorenzo ELEMENTS Styling Range

De Lorenzo Elements Styling Products

Recently De Lorenzo released it’s latest range of styling products called Elements, replacing the old range of Out of Line products. It’s evident that De Lorenzo have put a lot of thought into this new range inspired by Australia’s rich natural beauty with all products using certified organic ingredients along with all new packaging. Having used the products within the salon now, it’s great to see the improvements they’ve made to past products and the addition of some new products to the range. One of the key features of the entire range is the UV protectant in each of the products which is ideal for some of Australia’s coastal and warm climate areas.

While all 12 new products have been used and received positive feedback by Mode’s stylists there are some stand out products which we believe outshine other products on the market. First there is Extinguish which is a heat protectant spray ideal for applying over your hair prior to blow drying and straightening to minimise damage under extreme temperature conditions. Secondly there is Sea Swell (formly Bodify) which is a medium hold volumising lotion that expands hair cuticles providing all over volume, we’ve seen some great results on clients with this product. Thirdly, Barrel Waves (formly Create Curl) has had some major improvements made to it making it easier to create the curls you want from the comfort of your home.

If you’ve used the superseded Out of Line products in the past, you’ll welcome the new smells from each of the products in the Elements range where they boast scents reminiscent of natural ingredients found throughout Australia. Products with notable improvements from their predecessors include the gel now known as Titanium and Granite firm hold spray which isn’t as sticky as before. The old Wire and Barbed Wire now known as Grit and Mudslide respectively have received new ingredients and are great for men making it easier to get a desired style.

The Elements range is broken into 4 categories Earth, Air, Fire and Water, hence where the name comes from.

EARTH
Mud Slide – A strong hold, sculpting crème that provides texture, definition & shine.
Titanium – A fierce grip gel for looks that defy gravity.
Grit – A matt styling paste to craft gritty controlled styles.
Granite – A strong holding hair spray with a non-sticky touchable feel.

AIR
Motion – A mousse that delivers a firm, flexible hold to the hair.
Vapour Mist – A light hair spray providing shape, control and texture without weighing down the hair
Sand Storm – A dust sculpting spray that provides a matt, dry look with texture.

FIRE
Extinguish – A thermal protectant to minimise damage and stress to hair when using hot appliances.
Amplify – A spray to provide volume, control and body of a mousse without the foam.

WATER
Sea Swell – A medium hold volumising lotion that provides natural style control.
Barrel Waves – A defining crème to create manageable, smooth curls with long lasting control.
Ocean Mist – A salt infused spray that provides the feel and texture of beach washed hair.

Overall, we highly recommend the new Elements range and encourage our own salon clients to try these products next time they are in.
